Countdown to Copenhagen

by Susan Ellis of Keylifejourneys

People spend whole lifetimes seeking that which they already have. They have it, because they are it.
All you have to do to have love is to be love

I was at a weekend retreat at the Ecology Retreat Centre in the beautiful Hockley Valley in Ontario a couple of weeks ago. An intimate place of undulating glacial formed moraine, covered in trees, mosses, ferns and tinkling streams. The running water mimicked the sound of the rain falling on the leaves above me and I felt sandwiched in between. But not as a piece of ham separating two pieces of bread, but as melting cheese soaking unto and becoming part of the bread. I belonged.

I was no longer the observer, the steward, the owner of the land. I was part of the ecosystem. The path on which I danced was an extension of me and I was a part of it. To feel no separation is to engage in living at one's highest level. If I was to cause destruction to the earth, the trees, and the flowers: if I change the balance of the air that I and the plants breathe, then I destroy myself. How can I gain by this behaviour?

Yet soon the world will be watching Copenhagen. Each country will send representatives in December to decide how humanity will treat the earth, water and sky for the common good. But each country will go with its own agenda. Each government will go hoping to keep existing jobs and prevent industry from paying the heavy weight of change. Governments will debate selfishly. They have not been given a mandate to save humanity. We must understand that Mother Earth will adapt to survive without us, she does not need saving. She can live without us. But we cannot live without her.

Canada has elected a minority government which does not feel it has to represent the voice of anything other than industry. Can one's voice be heard? "People spend whole lifetimes seeking that which they already have." The vox populi. All over the globe these voices are being heard and governments that do not listen will ultimately be judged by their conduct.

Avaaz.org is one such organized voice. From the website-

Last month, from events in hundreds of cities, we flooded world leaders' phone lines with the Global Climate Wake-Up Call. This Saturday is the next global day of action on climate change--a worldwide wave of extraordinary events that will show leaders the accelerating breadth, power, and clarity of the global climate movement.

On Saturday, thanks to more than a year of organizing by our friends at 350.org and others, citizens have assembled more than 4000 extraordinary climate actions across nearly every country, from the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef to the summit of Mount Everest. Now, by joining actions in our own communities, we can supercharge the day and make the climate movement impossible to ignore. Click  to see the events map and find an event nearby:

Avaaz asked people world wide to demand of their delegates in Copenhagen

Petition to world leaders:
We call on our leaders to go to Copenhagen and sign a global climate treaty that is:

AMBITIOUS: enough to leave a planet safe for us all.

FAIR: for the poorest countries that did not cause climate change but are suffering most from it.

BINDING: with real targets that can be legally monitored and enforced.

So far 235,095 have signed

Avaaz.org has a history of getting its opinions heard.

So what is 350.org all about? Read about their 24 October 2009
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION
The 350 day of action is named for 350 parts per million, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere that scientists say would be the safe for the climate. (At the moment, we're at 387 parts per million and climbing fast.) Already, thanks to organizing around the world, 89 countries have now committed in principle to setting 350ppm as a worldwide goal -- and the number has become a kind of shorthand for the fair, ambitious, and binding climate treaty that we are all working for.

David Suzuki has another strong voice coming out of Canada and being heard the world over. He wants you to add your voice to his. Visit his website.

Then there is Earthhour.org

On this website they show that the Countdown to Copenhagen is now 46 days. People have voted from 4088 cities in 88 countries.  The home page states

In December this year, world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to determine how the world deals with climate change. Their choice is simple – Earth or global warming.
On March 28, hundreds of millions of people from 88 countries used their light switch to cast their Vote for Earth.
Add your voice to this global mandate. Show your vote for Earth and tell world leaders to seal a deal in Copenhagen – a deal that will protect people, and protect the planet.

So if you feel your voice is not being heard on this issue of human survival, go to these websites and let your name be counted. We are part of the earth's ecosystem. Like ripples on ponds our actions impact more than just ourselves. We are the ripple; we become what the ripple touches. We are it.
